It’s no surprise Merciless Sister has grow to be the speak of Dublin’s underground scene. When she started producing music from her bed room in summer season 2021, Religion Nico’s uncooked grunge anthems had all of the makings of one thing particular. The 21-year-old has since gone on to open up for native heroes Simply Mustard and indie mainstays The Wombats, and set up her place as one of many metropolis’s subsequent nice abilities.

In step with her transient output to this point, Nico’s second EP ‘Turgid’ is awash with a large number of various sounds. The primary curveball comes with the sweetened dream-pop opener, ‘As I Get Older’. The wonder lies within the observe’s simplicity as folky acoustic strums accompany soothing background pipes. Lyrically, she contemplates ignoring her internal baby through a heavy pang of coming-of-age turmoil: “I really feel her hate me once I ignore her…”

After a strong 10 seconds of scuzzy distortion and Wolf Alice-like vocal yelps, a swirling psych-tinged guitar line tees up ‘Lenny’ which culminates in a breathless gasp. It’s delightfully murky stuff as Nico sings of her personal frustrations rising up: “Lenny’s at all times been terrified of rejection / By no means places herself on the market, for her personal safety.”

Nico’s largest power, although, is her skill to deftly channel her personal trailblazing heroes. ‘Turgid’ gloriously unfurls in chaotic bouts of vitality, showcasing the rebellious game-changing sensibilities of Kim Gordon or Ellie Rowsell. On the shimmering ballad ‘Wolves’, she sings “I’m a sucker for delusion”, bringing to thoughts the ethereal vocals of PJ Harvey, one other artist who has harnessed darkness gorgeously in her work.

EP standout ‘Fingers’ feels poised to dominate any pageant foremost stage. Right here, Nico unpicks intrusive ideas and the necessity to sustain appearances with the world: “My palms carry all of my good ideas / Bleeding, soiled, combating the nice battle.” Climaxing in an emotional purge of feral screams, you get the sensation that that is music Nico must be making.

There’s no denying that ‘Turgid’ reveals an artist casting a large web, however Nico is clearly having all types of enjoyable throwing herself into new territories. This can be a very important and daring second assertion.
