Alan Rankine, co-founder of Scottish pop band The Associates, died Monday at 64.

The information was first reported by each the BBC and The Guardian after a Fb submit by the multi-instrumentalist’s’ two sons started circulating on the social community. “Callum and Hamish’s message say all of it,” Rankine’s ex-wife Belinda Henderson (nee Pearse) wrote to share the unhappy information. “‘It’s with nice disappointment that my brother, Hamish, and I announce the passing of our father, Alan Rankine. Shaped in 1979 by Rankine and singer Billy McKenzie, The Associates initially grew to become identified all through their native Scotland due to their unauthorized cowl of David Bowie’s “Boys Hold Swinging.” After the rendition received them signed to Fiction Information, the duo launched their debut studio set The Affectionate Punch in 1980 and have become integral in Britain’s New Pop motion. A follow-up compilation titled Fourth Drawer Down arrived the next 12 months and ultimately, the band launched three extra albums: 1982’s Sulk, 1985’s Maybe and 1990’s Wild and Lonely — although Rankine left the band on the precipice of touring across the remaining album.

Although none of The Associates’ music broke by on the Billboard charts over the course of their profession, although Fourth Drawer Down reached No. 5 on the U.Ok. Unbiased Albums Chart and Sulk peaked at No. 23 on the U.Ok.’s Official Albums Chart due to the recognition of its singles “Celebration Fears Two” and “Membership Nation.”

Later in his life, Rankine labored as a producer for artists like Cocteau Twins, Paul Haig and The Pale Fountains. He additionally launched a trio of solo albums together with The World Begins to Look Her Age in 1986, She Loves Me Not in 1987 and The Massive Image Sucks in 1989.
