As soon as upon a time, Lizzo was only a child in school with a flute and a dream. And now that she’s a 35-year-old international celebrity, the musician is giving again to younger Black college students at her alma mater who’re following in her footsteps, and she or he’s doing it by providing a model new scholarship in honor of Juneteenth.
“LIZZOS JUNETEENTH GIVEBACK IS PROUD TO PRESENT 50,000$ TO THE ‘SASHA BE FLOOTING SCHOLARSHIP’ AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON,” the Grammy winner captioned a video asserting the scholarship. “Thanks to @universityofhouston to your partnership and assist.”
Within the video, Lizzo shared that the partnership with the college is “very near my coronary heart, close to and pricey to dwelling and a milestone for me,” and famous that the winner of the scholarship can be introduced “very, very quickly.”
“It’s for any younger Black pupil from Houston, Texas who has utilized to go to College of Houston to review on the Moores College of Music,” she continued. “That was me only a couple years in the past, a younger Black flute participant who simply wanted a scholarship and somebody to consider in them. Now I get to pay it ahead.”
An hour previous to the announcement, Lizzo shared a throwback photograph of her youthful self taking part in flute within the College of Houston band with a brief tattoo of the varsity’s pink and white cougar mascot stamped on her cheek. “Meet Child Lizzo on scholarship on the College of Houston hoping she’ll earn a music efficiency diploma in flute….,” she wrote in her caption. “Little did she know she’d change the dialog on flutes in popular culture without end.”
The scholarship marks the fourth donation made in Lizzo’s sequence of Juneteenth givebacks, which has additionally seen her donate $50,000 to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, which serves the Black transgender neighborhood; Black Women Smile, which gives psychological well being companies to younger Black girls; and the Sphinx Group, a social justice program providing musical alternatives to Black and LatinX folks.
