Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Vampire” single opens with the melancholy sound of the singer initially whisper-singing the music’s biting lyrics over a gently performed piano. By the top of the primary refrain, although, as her voice rises, she’s immediately bolstered by a thrumming beat, strings and a bull-rush association that builds to a rush-of-blood-to-the-head dash.

However in a stripped-down stay efficiency on YouTube Thursday (July 6), the 20-year-old star washed all of that away and performed the primary single from her upcoming sophomore album, GUTS, on solo grand piano.

Opening with a shot from above, the transferring re-imagining begins with Rodrigo plucking the keys whereas singing the music’s overstuffed first verse. “I I hate to offer the satisfaction, asking the way you’re doing now/ How’s the citadel constructed off folks you faux to care about?/ Simply what you needed/ Have a look at you, cool man, you bought it,” she sings.

As she winds her solution to the primary refrain, the digicam swings to the aspect to seize Rodrigo in profile, her ardour rising as she hits the by-now-familiar vicious kiss-off chorus. “I used to suppose I used to be sensible/ However you made me look so naïve/ The best way you offered me for elements/ As you sunk your tooth into me, oh/ Bloodsucker, famef–ker/ Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire,” she croons in a heartsick yowl.

Whereas the piano take options the music’s NSFW chorus, earlier this week Rodrigo additionally shared a TikTok with some hilariously sanitized alternate radio edit lyrics to the music, swapping the f-word for some extra carpool-friendly rhymes, together with “tree hugger,” “fame hunter,” “whale blubber,” “Mark Zucker,” “fame lover” and “garlic butter.” GUTS is due out on Sept. 8.
