Will Smith introduced his new forthcoming podcast, Class of ’88, on Thursday (Sept. 21). Produced by Wondery, Audible, Westbrook and Awfully Good, Smith will rejoice 1988 hip-hop with episodes alongside Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rakim and Chuck D.
“Hip-hop has been a central a part of my life for over 4 many years,” Smith tells Billboard. “I’m hyped to share my first-hand experiences and people of a few of hip-hop’s best legends as we delve into the origins of probably the most influential genres of music in historical past.”
Smith will discover the landmark 12 months of 1988, which included the rise of Public Enemy, the ascension of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Recent Prince, and the outpouring of feminine MCs comparable to Salt-N-Pepa and Queen Latifah.
Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff loved success in 1988 with their standout document “Dad and mom Simply Don’t Perceive.” The track grew to become the primary to win the Grammy for greatest rap efficiency on the 1989 Grammy Awards. Controversy surrounded the win, because the duo boycotted the awards present as a result of their historic feat wasn’t televised. The track peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Scorching 100 and No. 10 on the Scorching R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The eight-episode sequence can be obtainable on Amazon Music and Audible starting Oct. 26. Prime members may also pay attention ad-free on Amazon Music.
